The Justice Files Episode 1
(Time-Lock 2021)
The Justice Files Episode 1 was created to dramatise one of the most famous contract law cases (Carlill v Carbolic Smoke Ball Company (1892)), for national and international use as a teaching aid and online resource. The film is intended as a pilot for a planned series of dramatizations of famous legal cases that established leading precedents in English law.
The case is fundamental to contract law and is thus a crucial aspect of English common law, which forms the basis of numerous legal systems around the world. Consequently, the Carlill case is taught to all law students (and all business students that study business law) in the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India and 30 other countries, from Antigua to Uganda. This pilot episode for The Justice Files is a unique dramatization of a case, which will provide a highly effective and engaging teaching aid and visual resource for a large potential audience.
In collaboration with Plymouth University, Time-Lock Productions have used a mix of professional actors and volunteers, to create a dramatisation that is accurate, informative and engaging for viewers. Shot on location using internal and external shoots, this production is currently in postproduction. Green screen overlays and animation help to recreate the period, together with costumes and authentic dialogue. In order to aid the understanding of the viewer, a Press reporter has been added to help ‘interpret’ the legal and historic language used in the case.
